Brief History:
Disappointed with the 6 cylinder version of the 250S a new 4 cylinder version of the car made its debut in 1957 at the Thousand Kilometres in Beunos Aires.  It was the third example of the new four-cylinder generation of Maserati (ie 150S, 200S).  The 2500 cc engine was built from the block of the 200S with a new crankshaft and an increase in stroke and installed on the frame of the now agreed 200SI with a streamlined nose and narrow sides.  Two versions of the car were built in this form, followed by a more streamlined version in 1958.  The primary effort however during this period was placed on the 250F and 450S, so efforts on the car were sidelined.  With the interest in hybrid construction, work on the engine was renewed in 1959 and the revised 250S motor appeared in the Cooper chassis in Grand Prix and in sports car category the Cooper Monaco had much success.
