The Tipo 26R was prepared to comply with a new
Grand Prix formula for 1928 in time for the Grand Prix of Italy, the car deriving its
name from an original system of connecting rods on rollers. The two
Tipo26R's prepared by Maserati were the only cars to comply with the new
formula, which collapsed shortly after. The cars continued to race in
other events with some success.
