Brief History:
Whilst descended from the in-line 8 cylinder supercharged engines the Tipo 26R differed from the original with a system of connecting rods on rollers (hence the "R" in the designation). The chassis derived from the latest lightweight 26B.  Prepared to comply with a new Grand Prix Formula with a weight limit of between 550 and 750 kg, the GP of Italy was the only one that upheld the requirement and Maserati was the only manufacturer able to comply with the rules by presenting two 1700 cc type 26R's.  The GP formula subsequently collapsed.  The Tipo 26R continued to race however with some success.
