History: |
|
| Following the
initial race of the 250S at Monza in 1954, Bellentani designed a 2.8 litre
in-line 6 cylinder, which on testing by Bertocchi and Villoresi was
abandoned to power a boat. Persisting with his long stroke theory
Bellentani developed a 3.0 litre six with dimensions of 84x90 mm and a
capacity of 2992.5 cc which on the lower compression of 9:1 developed
about the same power as the 250F. Apart from this fundamental
difference the other details were similar to the 2.5 litre of the
250F. Similarly the chassis showed similarities to the 250F, but
used a trellis structure of elliptical and round tubes. Due to the
similarities with the 250F the positive developments on that car flowed on
to the 300S including changes in carburettion, cylinder head, and exhaust
systems. Bodywork was designed by Fantuzzi and some face-lifting was done
on cars from 1956: some models had the nose lengthened and were
made more slender following the style of the 200SI, others had holes cut
to improve brake cooling for front and rear brakes and some cars later
benefited from the 450S brake development. The 300S had its best
year in 1956 and was only a step from the World Championship. In
1957 it played second fiddle to the 450S. With a three litre
displacement limit in force for 1958, three V12 options were developed,
but due to the company's circumstances at that time were never taken
further, albeit that Moss
tested a version in a 350S frame at Nurburgring in June, 1958. When
the tide turned in favour of Maserati participating in racing again in
1959, the Tipo 61 had arrived. |
