Brief History:
The range of cars in production in 1955 included the 250F, 300S, 250S, 200S, 150S and the A6G/54.  Experimentation was also being carried out on the 3500GT, the 250F T2 and the 450S.  The development arose from the availability of a frame for the 450S that had proved unsuitable and the inability to increase the size of the 300S engine which suffered a displacement handicap.  The opportunity to develop a competitive version of the engine destined for the 3500GT which had proved to both perform well and be reliable presented itself.  The chain driven camshaft of the 3500GT was retained, larger carburettors, lubrication was by dry sump and the 5-speed gearbox like the 300S was in unit with the differential.  In line with the 300S a De Dion axle was used with Houdaille levers and double shock absorbers.  The car driven by Moss and Jenkinson went off the road in the 1957 Mille Miglia, due to problems with the rear end and axle. Subsequent testing of the car showed it did not measure up against the 300S.  Problems identified with the first car were remedied in the second which had a set up similar to the 450S with the gearbox in a longitudinal position ahead of the differential and with a modified front suspension geometry.  With the car now handling well, interest was switched to the 450S.  The first car 3501 was renumbered to 4501 and became the first 450S.  The second car was sold to Tony Parravano in 1956. The third and final version of the car was the V12.
