Brief History:
The 420M was designed specially to compete at the 500 Miles of Monza and the Indianapolis 500 as the Monza event used the same regulations.  Production was made possible by the Eldorado ice cream company which insisted the car adopt is particular signage.  The V8 engine employed was derived from the 450S.  It had a tubular frame derived from the lightened version of the 250F.  The result was a single-seater with a 4200 cc displacement naturally aspirated engine.  Special light alloy wheels by Halibrand were used as the usual spokes could not cope with the strain of the Monza track.  The 1958 version was designated the 420M/58. Moss driving the car did well for the first two heats, but in the third it left the circuit at high speed due to a steering failure, despite this Moss finished seventh.  A second version was developed for the 1959 race, designated 420M/59 but due to problems failed to qualify.  A 420M motor via Tony Parravano with Hillborn fuel injection ran in a Kurtis frame in the 1959 Indianapolis 500 and although it qualified did not start.
