Brief History:
The 4CLT had its origins as a 4CL arising from experimentation by Ernesto Maserati with tubular design, dismountable crankshaft with roller bearings and a double stage compressor in 1947.  A modified 4CL made its debut with Villoresi at the Temporada Argentine race in that year and later after the Maserati brothers had left the company with a new tubular steel frame and a double-stage compressor in a 4CL driven by Ascari at the Marne GP at Rheims.  Following a revision of the rear suspension composed now of forged steel arms, but retaining the rigid axle and semi-cantilevered leaf springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, the 4CLT/48 made its debut at Sanremo in 1948 and indeed is often referred to as the 'Sanremo'.  Further developments occurred in 1949 with a revision to the brake drums incorporating radial slits, steering controls and the positioning of the oil tank resulting in a model often called the 4CLT/49.  Two further variations were made to the basic car the first to two 4LCT/48's which were prepared for the Temporada 'free formula' race in Argentina, where the capacity of the cars in 1950 was increased to 1720 cc by lengthening the stroke to 90 mm and increasing output to 290 bhp - an engine from one of these cars powered the 1951 Italcorse II of Piero Taruffi.  The second variation was the creation of the Maserati Plate, by Enrico Plate who removed the compressors, modified the engine to 2.0 litres with a 14:1 compression shortened the wheelbase and ran the cars under Formula 2 regulations. Then there was finally the 4CLT/50
