Brief History:
Wishing to build on the success achieved with the Tipo 26C, Alfieri sought to design a new 1100 cc car which could be used in both a racing and a sports version and in particular for events such as the Mille Miglia at which the 26C had been successful.  A new engine and a lightweight frame were conceived and a relationship with Pirelli was established reducing the dependence on Dunlop. First identified as just the 'Tipo 4C' and then the 'Tipo 4CTR" - the 'C' for 'corsa' or 'racing' and the 'TR' for 'testa riporta' or removable cylinder head - the car made its debut at Monza in racing version in 1931.  The 'Tipo 4CM' following that debut became the race version and the 'Tipo 4CS 1100' the sports version for events such as the Mille Miglia which it won four times in record times involving drivers such as Tuffanelli (1932) and Taruffi (1934) and Ettore Bianco in 1935 and 1936.
