In 1932 when the 4 cylinder 1100 and 1500 cc
engines began to show so much promise work began on two engines, one a 2000
cc with a stroke of 98 mm and the 2500 cc with a stroke of 112 mm. The
cylinder block of the 2500 cc with its fixed heads and thus fused in sets of
two was extracted from the 2000 cc by a simple increase in bore - from 80 mm
to 84 mm. Only one engine (No 2012) delayed until 1934 was
built, but it had a varied life. In 1934 it was first placed into an
old 2-seater sports frame but set up for circuit racing and therefore earned
the designation 4C 2500. In this form Taruffi drove it in the 1934
Monaco Grand Prix and then with Zehender at the Montreux. Afterward
(still in 1934) the engine was mounted in a single-seat frame for
Villapadierna and thereby earned its 4CM designation.
