This one-off design was the product of
collaboration between Ernesto Maserati and Albert Massimino and was created for
Guido Barbieri using an a 6CM engine - allegedly . owned by Gigi Villoresi. It made its debut at the Coppa Mercanti in Milan on
September 29, 1946 This car was considered to be Maserati's first
attempt at natural aspiration since the Tipo V4 at the Indianapolis 500 in
1930. Barbieri retired after 10 laps, however he won a week later at
Mantova. With Villoresi driving the following week the car won again
at Voghera. In 1947 the body was placed on a 4CL tubular frame and
campaigned for the rest of that year. The twin-cam Grand Prix derived motor was passed by in
favour of a single-cam six cylinder motor used in the Type A6 production vehicles from 1947 onward.
