|
| The 8CTF ('8', 'C'
cylinder, T for ''Testa Fista" or fixed head and 'F' for
"Formula") was
built to take advantage of the new international Grand Prix formula to
wrest away some of the domination of Mercedes Benz and Auto Union.
With the theoretical prospect of competing on equal terms and with the new
financial support of the Orsi family, Ernesto developed a new single
seater. The engine borrowed the bore and stroke of 69x100 mm again
from the 8CM and 4CM 1500 and created a new 3000 cc engine comprising two
cylinder blocks mounted on a common crankcase and cast in a single block
with the cylinder head. Each group of 4 cylinders had independent
carburettion, a legacy from experiments on the 8CM; two compressors one
driven directly by the crankshaft and another indirectly via a gear.
Memini carburettors were used as was single ignition. The firing
order on 3032, the last car made was changed to give smoother performance.
Suspension was similar to the 6CM with independent front and rigid axle
and cantilevered leaf springs and longitudinal struts in the rear.
Following their debut in Tripoli GP in 1938 the front cowling was enlarged
for cooling and further engine development which took the engine power to
365 bhp whilst owned by Maserati. The Shaw car retained this output
when sold but those sold to the French team were detuned on sale.
All three cars competed at Indianapolis in 1939 and 1940, with Wilbur Shaw
in no 3032 winning in both years. |
