Following his 'experiment' with the V4, Alfieri
had conceived of another innovation. Impressed by the Miller's
performance at Indianapolis and at Monza in 1929 and with the opportunity to
study the Cord system, via a client's car, in 1931 he started planning a
front wheel drive single seater as a potential grand prix car. Alfieri
planned the prototype with a 2500 cc engine and had foreseen the adoption of
the technology to all but the 16 cylinder models. His premature death at a
crucial point in the final preparation phase in 1932 brought an end to the
project, as the Maserati brothers did not have the resolve to complete
it. Other projects were competing, particularly as the new 3000 cc
motor had become available.
