| The success of Guido
Barbieri's 6CS/46 prompted renewed interest at the factory in sports car
racing which was rivalling that of grand prix and with the prospect of the
pre-war road races being run again there was a further incentive.
Ignoring the twin-cam 6 cylinder motor of the 6CM, it was decided to
further develop the single-cam that had been created for the A6. The
starting point was to increase the bore to give a 2000 cc displacement and
provide a new crankshaft, which had been achieved with the A6G 2000
Berlinetta, which was now put aside by Massimino in 1947 in favour of a
two seater to be called the A6GCS. The 'G' designated a crankcase of
cast iron, the C for corsa or racing and the S for sports. The frame
was tubular, without welds, of the 'Mannesman' type, an independent front
suspension and a return to a more orthodox rear suspension with rigid axle
and longitudinal leaf springs. Fantuzzi made a body with cycle guards and
a single headlight was used to conform with the international sports
category regulations. A second version, utilising an aerodynamic
'wrap-around' body, fenders connected to the body and a light-alloy engine
was developed in 1948. The A6GCS also competed against single-seater
in the new Formula 2 category with great success - minus of course the
road going gear and despite an overall weight disadvantage.. On
occasion the engine was mounted on the 4CLT frame which in fact was done
for Fangio at Agnouleme in 1950. In 1952 two cars sold to Argentina
were equipped with a dual ignition, dual overhead camshaft engine of the
type used in the A6GCM single seater. |
