The 16 cylinder V4 made its debut at Monza on
September 14, 1929 with Alfieri at the wheel. Two weeks later with
Borzacchini driving at Cremona it broke the world record for 10 km which
lasted until Malcolm Campbell in his specially constructed 'Bluebird' broke
it. The following year the car ran in the 1930 Indianapolis 500, but
deprived of its supercharger was unable to develop optimum output. The 'V'
designation reflected the arrangement of the two banks of 8 cylinders and
the '4' stood for the displacement of 4000 cc which was achieved by using
two Type 26B cylinder blocks and a common crankcase. Only two cars
were built, the one described, which was the race version, and a second car
built in 1930 which was a sport version, bodied by Zagato and designated
Tipo V4 Sport Zagato. The version proposed by Castagna in the 1931
sales brochure was never built.
