The 3500GT can lay
claim to being the first real production car made by Maserati in terns of
production volumes anyway. Derived from the ill-fated 350S the
3500GT utilised the same engine dimension, but dispensed with the gear
driven cams and dry sump. In keeping with the 'racing' tradition the
3500GT was build by Touring who utilised his 'Superleggera' construction. Two Maserati
3500GT's are shown in some detail here. The early cars
(ie series I) generally had four-speed transmissions, Borrani metal
wheels, front disc-rear wheel drums and weber carburettors.
Distinguishing characteristics are the circular parking lights, only one
quarter window panel in the side doors and a different tail light assembly
to the Series II. However, the early cars (1957 - 1958) were
sometimes quite varied as production did not get underway in earnest until
late in 1959.
