The A6 was not the first Maserati produced for
road use, as a handful of cars built for this purpose were produced prior
to 1940, the first perhaps being the 1930 Tipo V4 Sport Zagato of which
comment is made in the Race Car Gallery. The A6 series, to which the
A6 1500 belongs, marked the beginning of a more sustained attempt by
Maserati to become a manufacturer of production road cars. .Pinin Farina had conceived the original
conceptual design of the A6 in 1941 or earlier and it received its first
exposure with the a vehicle called variously the A6 1500 or 6C sport (see
Maserati Race Cars) which presented in spyder form the shape of the A6
1500 coupe which was developing at the same time, albeit powered with a
totally new engine. These initial coupes, probably 2, were very much
prototypes of the A6 or A6G 'production' cars which were to follow.
However, it wasn't until 1957 with the development of the 3500GT that
Maserati started the production of a vehicle that could be considered a
production 'road' car in the true sense. |
