The Biturbo i was presented at the end of 1996
and went into production in April 1997 - it represented a major turning
point for the Biturbo range. The introduction of the fuel injection
(Weber) and the electronic ignition (Magneti Marelli) changed the
characteristics of the car and made it much more tractable in traffic
ensuring smooth power delivery and better engine breathing. The system
was adopted across the range of Maserati vehicles. The 'S' version of
the car, produced for export as the SE, bore a spoiler on the rear
deck. The export version of the car came equipped with a 2.8 litre
motor.
