Based on the success with the V8's of the Mexico and the Quattroporte the Giorgetto Giugiaro design of a more sporting car was met with enthusiasm by the factory in 1965 and 12 months later the car was placed on the market in 1966.  By 1968 there had been a redesign of the interior and in 1969 the spyder version was released.  In 1970 both models were offered with a 4.9 litre V8 under the name of the "Ghibli SS"
