The Maserati Spyder was first unveiled by
Michael Schumacher at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September, 2001. Powered by an all new 4.2 litre naturally
aspirated V8, the introduction of the Spyder GT and Cambiocorsa version mark the
end of the turbo-engined Maserati introduced by de Tomaso with the Bi Turbo
series. The Maserati Spyder is not a variant of the 3200GT but is in
fact a completely new car though similar in appearance to the 3200GT.
The new car features a Maserati 6-speed manual rear mounted transaxle type
gear box and a new option - the Cambiocorsa gearbox, hydraulically operated
with electronic management by levers behind the steering wheel, there is no
clutch. Whilst front and rear track are the same as the 3200GT, the
wheel base is 220mm shorter. The closely related styling has a numbers
of subtle differences - and some not so. As can be seen from the rear
view of the car the distinctive 'boomerang' rear light treatment has been
abandoned on the new Spyder. These photographs have been taken from
