Brief History:
Released to the market in September, 2001 the Spyder is built around a chassis and an engine designed, conceived and created at the historic Modena factory in Viale Ciro Menotti.  With a shorter wheelbase, more compact tail the car sits on 18 inch wheels with a 15 spoke pattern.  The all new 4.2 naturally aspirated V8 weighs in 44.09 lb lighter than the 3200 engine, is dry sumped, has chain driven OH camshafts with 4 valves per cylinder using hydraulic valve adjusters.  The inlet camshafts are equipped with a continuous valve timing control system. As an alternative to the 6-speed manual gear box the option of an F1 styled gearbox with computer controlled gear change known as 'Cambiocorsa' is available.  Suspension is by double wishbone enhanced by a state of the art automatic suspension control system ('Skyhook') which utilising sensors monitoring wheel movement uses the control system to adjust spring dampeners to road conditions. A more detailed technical description of the vehicle can be found in the Maserati Pages on this site.
