Background to the Event
In mid 1998, Max Hobson and John Fitzpatrick, following
feedback received from a number of owners of historic, vintage and veteran cars,
felt the time was right for the club to get involved with the conduct of a touring event
for classic sporting cars. Subsequent research confirmed there was certainly scope for such an event. So planning began.
By April 1999, Max Hobson had returned again from the
California Mille having canvassed the outline of the proposed
inaugural MELBOURNE MILLE. The feedback from the California Mille was most enthusiastic - so much so, that we were encouraged to
proceed with the event.
The club was pleased to announce in
June, 1999 the
inaugural MELBOURNE MILLE would be run in October of that year and timed to coincide
with the club=s annual President=s Day Concours and Luncheon
as well as the Spring Racing Carnival
in Melbourne. The Melbourne Cup, the world=s richest weight for age horse race is
conducted at the beautiful Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of
November each year.
Looking back now on the inaugural
event, it is fair to say that it would have to be considered an outstanding
success - by any standard. With participants from around Australia and
several from North America (including representatives from the California
Mille), South America, Europe and New Zealand the event was judged by all
AFTER the event to have more than met its original objectives.
As you would
expect, each MELBOURNE MILLE continues to build
on the success of the very successful previous events. This
year's event will
certainly offer participants - whether local, interstate or international an
experience they will long remember.
The Event
The MELBOURNE MILLE is an event in the style of the California Mille. It
is certainly an event, which can, be looked upon quite favourably by the
Italian Mille Miglia as a true Australian retrospective.
The MELBOURNE MILLE is intended to bring together an exciting range or
rare, unique and unusual vehicles, largely manufactured between 1927 and 1957 (including
model run-ons) for a relaxed, non-competitive tour of the best Victoria can offer in terms
of stunning scenery, outstanding food, wines and accommodation and of course challenging
all-tarmac roads.
Specifically, the MELBOURNE MILLE offers the owners of classic sporting
cars, which could have competed in the Mille Miglia, the opportunity to:
Tour the best roads of Victoria experiencing first class meals, wines
and accommodation.
Enjoy your classic car at the pace you want, while seeing Victoria at
its most beautiful.
Enjoy the opportunity of touring in the company of a unique assembly of
rare and beautiful classic sporting cars
Enjoy the experience in the company of like-minded people.
Straightforward navigation, pre-arranged lunch stops.
Tarmac back roads offering challenging motoring and a 1000 mile
adventure.
Overnight stops at first class venues include pre-dinner drinks and
quality meals and wines, with ample opportunity to exaggerate on the day=s events.
Nothing Extra to
Pay!
When you think about what other events really cost, after adding in the
entry fee, cost of meals three times a day, wines and refreshments each evening,
accommodation and other ancillaries, costs can often get away from what you anticipated.
In the MELBOURNE MILLE your entry fee covers:
Your accommodation (the best available).
Your meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner (including beers and selected
wines with dinner) and feature local produce.
Luggage service.
Limited support of a travelling mechanic and recovery vehicle.
So from start to finish you only need to pay for your petrol and
personals.
The Route:
The MELBOURNE MILLE is a non-competitive tour,
conducted at your pace, over
approximately 1000 miles of Victoria=s best
roads, starting in Melbourne. The course is altered each year so that
following year is not a repeat of the previous route.
Overnight stops typically
include Lakes Entrance, Mt Buffalo and Mt Bulla before returning to
a near-Melbourne for
the Celebration Dinner. Navigation is straightforward.
There are no intermediate controls or check-points. Participants are only required to
arrive at predetermined stops as specified in the easy-to-follow Route Instructions for
morning tea, lunch and overnight stop.
