| Whilst many chose the Grand Prix
Rally as a convenient event to travel to Adelaide to watch the F1 guys put
on their act at the Australian Grand Prix, in the latter years of the
event in Adelaide increasing numbers chose the Tour T'Adelaide. Although
smaller in numbers the event was well patronised and highly competitive.
Past winners include Jeff and Neridah Beable in the famous 'two-ton'
pussy.
The success of the inaugural Clipsal 500 in
Adelaide last in 2000, together with the F1 Legends event has served to put
'Sensational Adelaide' back on the map again. The Clipsal 500 this year
looks as if it is going to be even bigger than the inaugural event, if
that's possible. In view of the popularity of the Clipsal
500, Rowan Harmon of Harmon Autosports decided to resurrect Terry
Lawrie's Tour T'Adelaide and did so to great effect in 2001.
In 2002 the Tour TAdelaide
will return to the original concept and be an all V8 event. Whilst the
event officially gets underway on Sunday, March 10 from Geelong, plans are
afoot to conduct a Welcome function there on the Saturday evening.
The basic schedule of the event is along the following
lines:
-
Sunday: Geelong area Start with competitive
events finishing with navigation to Camperdown and an overnight
-
Monday: Up to 3 runs up Mt Leura Hillclimb,
navigation to Penshurst and the Mt Rouse Medium Time Section for 2
runs and including the Hydrosteer Trophy Dash. Then from Mt
Rouse to Hamilton for the now traditional Woodys Half Way Dinner
-
Tuesday: Hamilton Giant Autotest and 400m
sprints before the Closed Road sections at Wannon Falls and lunch at
the Heatherleigh Homestead, another highlight of the Tour. Then
navigation to Mt Gambier for the overnight.
-

Section via the Coonawarra (Morning tea), to the Mitsubishi Test Track
at Tailem Bend, which is where the Standing 1000m, Go-Whoa, Circle
Work and perhaps time for an improvised short circuit lap sprint. Then
a short drive to Harndorf and a function at the Harndorf Resort.
-
Thursday: Head up through the Adelaide Hills
on a quick navigation to Collingrove for a couple of runs before the
final competitive at Mallala. Thursday night in Adelaide.
-
Friday: Vehicle display at the Clipsal 500
and the presentation lunch at the Royal Coach
-
Saturday: Vehicle display at the Clipsal 500
and a lap of the Adelaide Street Circuit
-
Sunday: Clipsal 500
Entries for the 2002 event will be closed off at about
30. "Closing of at this number ensures there is a minimum of standing
around and has become our standard. A competitive, but social event.",
Rowan said. The Tour TAdelaide is recognised as an official event of
the Clipsal 500.
