The JALM Challenge
an inter-club challenge for
Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Lotus & Maserati
Calder Park, Sunday, April 11,
1999 |

|
|
|
| The JALM Challenge
had its genesis in late 1998 and arose following some discussions with Terence Seymour of
the Lotus Club. The objective was to conduct a track day with a bit of a competition
between the Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Lotus and Maserati Clubs, offer some prizes and mementoes
and generally ensure everyone had a good time. =t run a track
meeting there in the rain. On checking we found that the track was scheduled for
resurfacing in early April to ensure the V8 Supercars= round would not
be jeapardised. As the JALM day grew closer, we decided to check with Calder regarding the
resurfacing date (It would have been a disaster to have held the event on a wet day). We
were advised AYes, the track will be resurface, but not until the week commencing April 12.@ Great news.
Subsequently there was much praying for a sunny day.
All the praying obviously paid off. April 11, the day of the JALM Challenge turned out
to be an absolutely perfect day. Unfortunately however, the field was however well short
of what was desirable. The Jaguar Club had only 13 entries, the Alfa Romeo Owners = Club 16 and
Lotus Club Victoria only 17, making a combined total of 46. Each club was well short of
the 24 required.
The Maserati Club was however in a fairly strong position. We had a team of 24 and a
further 10 reserves for the day.
From an Event Management point of view it was important that we run the event with
fields of eight cars. This meant that the entries had to be some multiple of 8.
Fortuitously, the total number of team entries came to 70 and by giving each of our 10
reserves a run we had a total field of 80 for the day. (Phew!)
Whilst the ten reserves could get a run on the day, they were unable to earn points for
the Club in the JALM Challenge. Each club was restricted to 24 Team Members and there
could be no substitution. Each club was naturally anxious that each of their Team Members
actually made it on the day. Unfortunately one or two didn =t and the clubs
concerned were affected adversely. Offsetting this disadvantage was the issue of
reliability. As no substitution was permitted, this meant that the drivers of each team
had to compete in each of their three sessions. One of two failed to make it beyond the
Practice Session in the morning, which added further interest to the event.
To add some interest to the event, we started cars in pairs. Initially cars were formed
into groups in the Marshalling area and then proceeded to grid up via the pit access lane
(which was divided into two lanes by witches hats) to the drag strip staging area. This
way two cars were flagged off at a time to commence their flying laps. This starting
procedure not only proved of some interest it also proved to be quite efficient.
But what were the results?
All drivers participating in the JALM Teams received a specially designed Driver
Medallion as a memento of the day. In addition there were trophies awarded to the driver
who achieved the fastest flying lap for his/her club on the day, for which all drivers on
the day were eligible, viz:

It was pleasing to see each Club won a trophy for a Class Award (even if one of
the drivers was a Maserati member). As can be seen from the times, the battle for >FTD=
was very close. Finally, we come to the results for The JALM Challenge 1999. The
winning club I am pleased to confirm was Maserati.
Bearing in mind that fact that a few drivers
in the Maserati team didn =t make it to the start line and that a few missed some of the
sessions on the day, the trophy was not won through sheer presence of numbers on the day.
Indeed the result was a testimony to the depth of the Maserati Club team. As one of the
driver=s from a competitive club put it so succinctly: A..congratulations
to the Maserati Club of Australia on winning the inaugural JALM perpetual trophy. This was
done not by sheer force of numbers but a spectacular display of skill, a thoroughly
deserving win.@
Congratulations are in order. First of all a big >thank you= to the drivers
who participated in the winning Maserati Team. Thank you also to the ten drivers who had
the forbearance to act as reserves and whilst not competing in the team section at least
gave themselves a chance at a trophy. Without your support the event would have been
difficult to run.
Last, but certainly not least a very special >thank you= to those club
members that took the time out to act as officials on the day and in particular: Greg
Aimers, David Floyd, Norman May, Duncan Pascoe, Alison Rose, Carol Williams, Tracey
Williams and Travis Williams. Your efforts ensured the success of the day.
