Following our
decision to move this event from "the first Sunday in October"
last year, the Annual Spring Track Day was once again held in mid-October.
Whilst it is possible to avoid conflict with some events (eg Bathurst and
Phillip Island 500 cc) and to a certain extent work in with others (eg
Historic Sandown), such is the state of the motorsport calendar that it is
impossible not to conflict with other events. Despite a conflict with the
Indy at the Gold Coast and events at both Calder and Winton some 77
entries were received for this years event - a reduction in the size of
the usual field, but large enough to meet the club's limited financial
objectives and small enough to ensure sufficient track time to those who
attended.
The day started roughly on time and most
importantly in sunshine. The club seems blessed as far as the weather is
concerned ... it is a long time indeed since we have encountered a wet
Sandown!
There were a few familiar faces missing
from the entry list with other events and personal pursuits taking
precedence on the day for some. This opened the way for Tasmanian member
Brad Sherriff in the Mazda RX7 to record the fastest time of day: 1:23.35
ahead of Brian Power in his Porsche 993 RSCS (1:24.78) and Sven Westphal
in his Porsche 911 RS (1:25.77).
Brad's time of 1:23.45 was 0.40 of a second
quicker than his last outing at Sandown earlier in the year at the club's
Grand Prix Track Day. His time on that occasion earning him third fastest
behind Ojars Balodis and Mike Roddy, both of whom were in the 1:21s. Given
the nature of the car, Brad's performance was first class.
Congratulations!
There were a lot of good times recorded on
the day, albeit that the representation of some marques was down.

There
were some interesting times recorded on the day. Amongst the Jaguar XJ6
Sprinters Paul Zazryn put in the fastest time with a 1:33.94. These cars
have improved their times dramatically over the past 12 months. We
understand moves are afoot to get them properly classified with CAMS and
get a proper race series off the ground next year. With Jaguar entering
Formula One next year, maybe they should be given the opportunity to show
their stuff at Albert Park. An event featuring the Sprinters and honoring
the Jaguar marque I'm quite sure would be a big crowd pleaser!
Speaking of Jaguar, Brett
Dunstone usually seen in his powerful XJS arrived on the day in a Subaru
WRX ... the change in vehicle did not seem to worry him to much and he
managed to put in a quick time in the Peter Kyriakidis range of 1:28.
There were some big improvers
on the day too. Sam de Meyrick, Steven Scrofani, Colin Goundrey and Dee
Stephen. All succeeded in getting below 1:50. Well done!
Despite
the excellent conditions on the day only seven drivers were below 1:30 on
the day. In fact times in most case were marginally slower than those
recorded at the Grand Prix Track Day in March when some 20 drivers were
below 1:30.
Although there were a few
retirements during the day due to mechanical gremlins the day was free
from incident. Andrew Ogg however must be thinking twice about entering
the event again next year. Last year at this event he was getting his
recently acquired Escort sorted out for Classic Adelaide when it
experienced an engine failure forcing him to withdraw from that event.
This year after having a successful run in the Lactos Heritage Rally in
Tasmania, a run at the Grand Prix Track Day, the Winter Track Day and two
full sessions in the Six Hour, the car expired again. Fortunately, the
engine rebuild has occurred a bit more quickly this time and he will get
to Classic Adelaide at last ... but it was dja vu for a while!
Taken overall the 1999 Annual
Spring Track Day was once again a successful event. Many thanks to the
club members who officiated on the day, without them the event would not
be possible.
PS: Ross Coles when he is not
looking after the Jag Sprinters also happens to be a professional
photographer. Ross took quite a number of shots of many of the cars in
this event. Perhaps you were one of them? To check to see if Ross
photographed your car you can call him on 0417 351 304.
