Club Track days in 2003

This year the club plans to run four track days and Entry Forms are available via the Download section or the 'Quick Access' page.   These four days in conjunction with many opportunities for members to attend the track days of other clubs, should keep even the most ardent track enthusiast busy.  One of the highlights of the Club year for those with an interest in using their car on a circuit is the Winton Six Hour - details are provided below, together with an explanation as to how you can register your interest as a DRIVER or as an OFFICIAL for this important event.

Maserati Club Track Days

Maserati Club Track Days cater for both the very experienced circuit racer and rally driver and for the first timer using his car at a circuit for the first time.  This is achieved by conducting the day in three parts:

  • Track Familiarisation:  The 'morning' of the track day is devoted to track familiarisation and instruction (where this is required).  It is also an opportunity for Drivers to carry passengers.  These sessions which are run from 9.00 am to 12 noon are intended to be at 80% of the vehicle's capacity.
  • Practice:  Between 12 noon and 1.00 pm is usually declared a 'Practice' session in which no passengers or instructors are permitted.  In many cases, depending on the representation of the newer drivers in the field, this session may be collapsed into the timed session.
  • Timed Session:  Usually from 1.00 pm onward.  Like the Practice session no passengers are allowed.  This session occupies the rest of the day until the track is closed at 5.00 pm.

The number of vehicles permitted on the circuit is limited.  Typically 8 drivers, equally spaced are permitted on the track at any one time during the Practice and Timed sessions.  Track density is increased in the 'morning' session.

Drivers and their vehicles are graded by expected lap times initially and may be regraded during the course of the day.  The objective is to split the field into four or five groups each of which has roughly similar times.  By using this system of grading the first timer can spend time on the track without the concern of being overtaken by much quicker vehicles.  Conversely, the quicker cars can circulate at high pace without concern that they will be baulked by slower cars.

Maserati Club track days are popular events and often the stepping stone to a more serious involvement in motor sport.  The schedule below lists the club events planned.

TO TOP OF THIS PAGEThe Winton Six Hour Relay Race

This event has re-established itself on the CAMS calendar and rapidly become a preferred event for many.  Above all it is a TEAM event.  The event requires drivers who have a current circuit racing licence (C3 or superior) and a vehicle that meets the requirements of the event.  But to make the event work, OFFICIALS are also required, without them a team in this event can not function.  If you're interested, read on:

Dates

The Marque Sport Car Association's 6 Hour Relay race will be held this year at Winton on Saturday (Qualifying) October 18 and Sunday (the race) October 19, 2003. Those of you who were in a club team in 1997 to 2002 are well aware, this is a great event ... no matter whether you drive or act as an official.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONRecent History

The Six Hour after an absence of a few years got back on the calendar in 1997. The Maserati Club was one of the twelve or so to field a team. In 1998, based on the success of the meeting from a competitors standpoint some 26 teams lined up on the starting grid. In 1999 the number of applicant teams was over 40, but by the commencement of the event had reduced to 33. Saturday practice reduced the final Sunday grid to 31. In 2000 the grid comprised some 37 teams and in 2001 it was at maximum capacity of 38 with a queue of reserve teams.  Since 2000 the grid has run at grid capacity (38) and there is keen competition for team places.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONPlanned Representation

Starting with a single team in 1997 and two teams in 1998, the Club entered 5 teams in 1999, but due to last minute conflicts and mechanical problems, three teams finally lined up on the starting grid for the club on the Sunday. Since 2001 the club has run four teams with each team comprising four cars.  So if your motor sport AND business calendar has a blank spot at this time of year, then register for the event.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONRequirements of Drivers & Cars

To drive in the event, you must:

  • have a CAMS Level 3 circuit competition licence or superior;
  • have a CAMS log book for a Category 2, 3 or 5th category vehicle.

Both of these items are relatively easy to obtain and if you are starting out in motorsport you have plenty of time between now and the event.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONRequirements of Officials

To be an official you must be able to attend on both days. No previous experience is required. Each team requires a minimum of four officials to assist in such tasks as marshalling team cars, timing, lap scoring and team management. The capacity of team officials to manage the performance of their cars on and off the track is a critical success factor is this event.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONCosts

To participate in the event as a driver the cost will be ca $600 this year and is based on the costs experienced in 2002.  This estimate includes estimates of the cost of the entry fee, purchase of competition numbers, hire of Dorian transponders, garage hire, catering and race-day fuel costs. It does not include costs of meals and accommodation or the costs of private practice on the Friday prior to the event. Officials will be asked to meet their costs of accommodation, but will be provided lunch at the circuit on both days.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONRegistering your intentions

To get three teams to the grid with the necessary support officials we have to start our planning now to ensure that we can lodge and pay for the team entries by the end of June. To do this we run to the following schedule:

  • Registration of Interest, closes in the last week of May
  • Nomination of Club Teams and request for payment in the first week of June
  • Lodgement of Team Entries and Fees, June 30
  • Team Meeting 1 prior to July 31
  • Team Meeting 2 (if required) about two weeks prior to the commencement of the event.

In the event that more registrations are received than team places are available, a reserve list will be created and every effort will be made to ensure that the persons affected are given a place in an existing team, or that additional teams are created.

TO TOP OF THIS SECTIONOnly register if your are serious

It needs to be recognised that this is a TEAM event and late withdrawals impact significantly on other members of the team ... so if your are considering entering this event, please make sure that you and your car are in a position to be on the grid for practice/qualifying on the Saturday of the event.
